The Summer Field School Begins!

This summer marks an exciting milestone for Old Cahawba Archaeological Park.

After months of planning, preparation, and collaboration, Cahawba officially welcomed students to our first Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Archaeological Training Program. Participants have traveled from across Alabama and around the country to spend their summer learning, exploring, and helping uncover the stories that make Old Cahawba such a special place.

Before fieldwork began, students spent a week immersed in hands-on workshops covering Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Photogrammetry. These technologies are used by archaeologists and preservation professionals to locate, document, and better understand cultural resources, and they are essential tools in today's Cultural Resource Management field.

Over the coming weeks, students will be working throughout the park, gaining practical experience while contributing to ongoing research and preservation efforts. Their work will help us learn more about the people who lived, worked, and built lives in Alabama's first state capital, while also preparing these future professionals for careers in archaeology, historic preservation, and cultural resource management.
